In a few cases, the infection at the tips of the teeth is not completely eliminated or healing isn’t satisfactory achieved after root canal treatment or re-treatment. In such cases, direct surgical access to the root tips of the teeth is gained through the gums. Under microscopic vision, the root end is resected, a reverse cavity is prepared using specialized ultrasonic instruments and filled with a unique material (MTA).
A very small percent of teeth that have been adequately root canal treated would be indicated for root canal surgery. Sometimes, root canal surgery is opted for instead of root canal re-treatment, when the costs and benefits of endodontic surgery outweigh those of re-treatment.
